Jim Caviezel and Monica Bellucci Skip Roles in Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ Sequel
The highly anticipated sequel to Mel Gibson’s acclaimed film, The Passion of the Christ, titled The Resurrection of Christ, will be released in 2027. Notably, original cast members Jim Caviezel and Monica Bellucci will not be returning for this installment.
Cast Changes and Reasons
Both Caviezel and Bellucci, who portrayed Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene respectively, will not reprise their roles in the sequel. This decision is largely due to scheduling conflicts and the need for digital de-aging technology to accommodate their return after more than two decades. Roman casting is currently underway for their replacements.
Jim Caviezel’s Perspective
In April, Caviezel expressed his hopes of returning for the sequel during an appearance on the Arroyo Grande podcast. He acknowledged the passage of time since the original film, stating, “Now I get these bonus years and I had no idea [during the original film].” Caviezel admitted to feeling apprehensive but also expressed his eagerness to work in a challenging environment.

- Part One: Good Friday, March 26, 2027
- Part Two: Ascension Day, May 6, 2027
Both parts of the sequel will be released by Lionsgate. Specific plot details remain undisclosed.

The 2004 film made a lasting impact on the industry. It was the highest-grossing R-rated film domestically until recently, grossing $370 million in North America alone and over $610 million worldwide on a $30 million budget.
