Guinea Charges 60 Individuals in Connection with Deadly Riot at Gold Mine

Guinea has initiated legal proceedings against 60 individuals linked to a violent riot at the Weily Mining firm. The incident occurred on October 4 in the Siguiri region, known for its gold production.

Background of the Incident

The riot was triggered when locals demanded the release of 17 individuals previously detained for vandalism at the mining site. Public prosecutor Ibrahima I. Camara confirmed the unrest in a recent statement, highlighting the severe consequences of the events.

Details of the Riot

During the tumultuous protest, rioters attacked the mine property, resulting in significant damage:

  • 10 buses were set on fire
  • 2 pickup trucks, one belonging to the gendarmerie, were destroyed
  • 2 buildings at the mining site were set ablaze

Tragically, the riot resulted in two fatalities and multiple injuries. The charges against the arrested individuals include arson, theft, destruction of property, and complicity in murder.

Weily Mining’s Response

Weily Mining, which recently began exporting gold from its Niagassola mine, is not currently available for comment regarding the incident. The firm exported its first gold shipment in September 2024.

Wider Implications

This violent outbreak underscores rising tensions in Siguiri, where illegal artisanal mining operations are common. The area is also home to multiple open-pit gold mines operated by AngloGold Ashanti, among others.

Guinea holds some of the world’s largest bauxite reserves and significant iron ore deposits, notably at Simandou. The country has witnessed increasing unrest at mining sites, exacerbated by a regulatory crackdown by the military junta, which has been in power since 2021.

Government’s Response to Mining Tensions

The junta aims to enhance economic growth by renegotiating mining contracts. Efforts also focus on accelerating project development and boosting state revenues from Guinea’s natural resources. Investigations into the recent riot will involve a collaborative effort between the police and gendarmerie.
