Minami Katsu Shoots Stunning 61 to Secure Two-Shot Lead at Buick LPGA Shanghai

Minami Katsu showcased an exceptional performance at the Buick LPGA Shanghai, setting a new course record. The 27-year-old from Japan achieved an impressive 11-under 61 during Friday’s round at Qizhong Garden Golf Club. This remarkable feat gave her a two-shot lead at the tournament’s halfway point.

Impressive Front Nine Performance

Katsu delivered a captivating front nine with six birdies. A minor setback came with a bogey on the par-4 10th, but she swiftly recovered, finishing with six more birdies. Her total score stood at 13-under 131 after two rounds as she pursued her inaugural tour win.

Breaking Records

The round also propelled her past the previous 18-hole record held by Sei Young Kim. Katsu expressed her satisfaction with the achievement but maintained focus on the remaining two tournament days.

  • Katsu’s previous personal best was 10 under.
  • She improved her record by one stroke compared to last year.
  • Her consistent play resulted in setting a new 36-hole scoring benchmark.

Leaderboard Dynamics

Sitting at second place, Ina Yoon scored 68, reaching 11 under. Americans Jenny Bae and Lindy Duncan followed closely with scores of 67. Bae’s promising round faltered on the 18th hole due to a triple bogey, ending with a 69.

Overnight leader Arpichaya Yubol carded a 71, tying for fifth with Somi Lee and Jeeno Thitikul.

Asian Tour Schedule

This Shanghai event marks the beginning of a five-tournament series in Asia. Following rounds will take place in South Korea, with events in Malaysia and Japan completing the schedule. Last week, Youmin Hwang continued the LPGA trend of diverse winners by becoming the sixth South Korean champion this season.
