Trump Administration Halts Key Solar Project in Latest Blow to Renewable Energy

The Trump administration has halted a significant solar power project in Nevada. This was intended to be one of the largest solar initiatives globally.

Esmeralda 7 Solar Project Canceled

Demonstrating its stance on renewable energy, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) canceled the environmental review for the Esmeralda 7 project. Initially reported by Heatmap, the project was set to span 185 square miles in southern Nevada.

Ambitious Plans and Developers Involved

Planned to include seven solar projects from companies such as NextEra Energy Resources and Leeward Renewable Energy, it aimed for a 6.2 gigawatt output. This would have been sufficient to power nearly two million homes.

Possibility for Resubmission

The Interior Department indicated parts of the project might be resubmitted. According to a spokesperson, the Esmeralda 7 developers might submit individual proposals to the BLM for a more targeted analysis.

Energy Policy Under Trump

Despite permitting during Joe Biden’s term, complications emerged when Trump returned to office. The BLM’s draft environmental statement failed to advance into a final decision.

Communication from Developers

NextEra Energy Resources emphasized their ongoing commitment, stating their intent to pursue comprehensive environmental analysis alongside the BLM. Comments from other developers remain awaited.

Political Moves Against Renewable Energy

  • Trump paused new renewable energy authorizations on federal lands.
  • Kathleen Sgamma, linked to the oil industry, leads the BLM.
  • Trump exerted control over wind and solar policies, halting further projects.

In a bold statement, Trump declared on Truth Social his administration’s disapproval of renewable initiatives, calling an end to solar and wind projects.
