El-Sisi and Trump to Lead Gaza Summit in Egypt This Monday

Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi will jointly lead an international summit on Monday. The meeting, taking place in Sharm el-Sheikh, will address the proposal by the US president to end the ongoing conflict in Gaza. More than 20 world leaders are expected to participate, according to the Egyptian presidency.

Gaza Conflict Discussion

The summit aims to cease the war in the Gaza Strip and promote peace and stability in the Middle East. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer are among the attendees. Additionally, leaders from Italy, Spain, and France have confirmed their presence. It remains uncertain whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or representatives from Hamas will attend the talks.

Current Developments in Gaza

Recently, tens of thousands of Palestinians began returning north in Gaza, following a US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The ceasefire facilitated a partial withdrawal of Israeli troops. This agreement has brought a halt to a destructive war that claimed over 67,000 lives and devastated the region.

Relief Efforts Underway

  • Gaza’s Government Media Office announced over 5,000 operations post-ceasefire.
  • 850+ rescue and relief missions have been conducted by local teams.
  • 150 bodies recovered so far, with significant efforts in Khan Younis.
  • 900+ missions to restore water and sewage lines complete despite resource shortages.

Severe blockades continue to limit resources, affecting recovery operations. Gaza’s citizens faced ongoing challenges due to destroyed infrastructure, including ambulances and civil defense facilities.

Urgent Need for Aid

Aid agencies are pushing for more open crossings to facilitate humanitarian aid into Gaza. The World Food Programme (WFP) is ready to resume food distribution at 145 sites once allowed. Antoine Renard of the WFP emphasized the necessity of opening crossings based on prior successful operations.

Exchange and Release Deal

In a significant development, 20 Israeli captives and the bodies of 28 others are expected to be returned by Hamas as part of the ceasefire agreement. Israel is set to release approximately 250 Palestinian prisoners and 1,700 individuals detained without charge.

There are continued concerns over the treatment of Palestinian detainees. Past prisoner exchanges involved delays and reports of maltreatment during detention.

Public Reactions and Protests

In Tel Aviv, Hostages Square filled with tens of thousands supporting their return. Trump, Jared Kushner, and Steve Witkoff received praise for their roles in negotiations. Protesters expressed skepticism towards Israeli leadership, instead crediting the US team for their efforts.
