Young demolition derby champions rev up excitement at Rockton World’s Fair

The 173rd annual Rockton World’s Fair has begun, featuring traditional attractions like the midway, carnival food, and horse shows. However, the highlight this year is the thrilling demolition derby, drawing significant attention from both participants and spectators.

Young Demolition Derby Champions Take the Spotlight

This year’s derby features talented young drivers who are excited to showcase their skills. Among the participants is 14-year-old Ava Patton, who has been demolishing cars since the age of 11. “I did my first ever derby in America at 11, because in America you only have to be 10,” she explained. Ava credits her father for her passion for demolition derbies, emphasizing his long history in the sport.

Ava’s Rockton Debut

This year marks Ava’s debut at her local fair. “I’m a little more nervous because I have more people to impress, but it’ll be good,” she said. Her excitement is palpable as she takes on the challenge.

Cara and Chayla Rivers: From Nova Scotia to Rockton

Joining Ava are 17-year-old Cara Rivers and her 14-year-old sister Chayla, who traveled from Nova Scotia to participate in the derby. Cara expressed her feelings about the event: “There’s a lot of excitement… Happy, scary, people are ramming into you all the time.” She emphasized the importance of maintaining a clear head during the races.

  • Chayla is participating in her first-ever demolition derby.
  • She described her excitement as “probably really high” but admitted to feeling scared as well.

A Family Tradition

The Rivers and Patton families have a long history in demolition derbies, with Chris Rivers proudly noting how his daughters are following in their parents’ footsteps. “It pulls on your heartstrings to see the girls follow in your footsteps,” Chris stated. Both families share a strong bond through their love for racing.

Safety First in the Derby

With safety being a priority, the racers are equipped with helmets and knee pads. “We build the cars pretty safe,” explained Dave Patton. He reassured everyone that since the derby is held on dirt, the impacts are less severe than those on asphalt roads.

Race Details

Ava, Cara, and Chayla will compete in three races each, utilizing a total of nine cars. This guarantees plenty of action and excitement.

The Rockton World’s Fair continues to celebrate the spirit of community through thrilling events like the demolition derby, showcasing young talent and family traditions in racing.
