MoTAI Agri-Impact and PwC spearhead initiatives for Ghana’s inaugural National Agribusiness Policy

The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry (MoTAI) and Agri-Impact Limited, along with PwC and other partners, recently launched a series of regional dialogues to support Ghana’s National Agribusiness Policy. The first session took place on October 10, 2025, at the Impact Building of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in the Ashanti Region.

Overview of the Agribusiness Dialogue

This dialogue follows a national discussion held in July 2025, attended by President John Dramani Mahama and Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare. The aim is to gather insights from agribusiness professionals across the country.

Key Contributions from Industry Leaders

  • Daniel Fahene Acquaye: CEO of Agri-Impact Limited, emphasized the necessity of an AgriFund to bolster the agricultural sector. He highlighted the significant $2 billion annual food imports and the extensive estimates of post-harvest losses, valued between $1.9 and $2 billion.
  • Kwame Ntim: Head of Agribusiness at MoTAI, discussed the need for a unified policy to guide the fragmented agribusiness sector. He noted that engaging with stakeholders would help identify priority areas for effective policy formulation.
  • Hayfron Aboagye: A Partner at PwC Ghana, urged collective action to maximize Ghana’s agribusiness potential. He stated that abundant yet untapped land reflects the country’s untapped agricultural wealth.

Statistics and Insights on Agricultural Challenges

Mr. Acquaye provided revealing statistics, indicating that the Ashanti Region alone consumes food and non-alcoholic beverages worth approximately GH₵14 billion (about $1.2 billion). He stressed that the annual post-harvest losses could sustain the entire region’s food needs for over a year and a half.

The Path Forward for Ghana’s Agribusiness Sector

As the discussions continue, the focus will remain on transforming agribusiness through strategic investments and reducing waste. Collaborative efforts among stakeholders are crucial for reshaping Ghana’s agribusiness landscape, positioning it as a vital component of the national economy.

The agribusiness dialogue initiatives by MoTAI and its partners signify a commitment to overcoming challenges within the sector and steering it towards sustainable growth.
