Atletico Ottawa co-captain Alberto Zapater has announced his retirement from professional football, ending a remarkable career. Known as the “eternal captain” of Real Zaragoza, Zapater has spent his last three seasons in Canada, showcasing his talents and leadership in the Canadian Premier League (CPL).
A Storied Career Across Continents
Zapater made his professional debut in 2004 and has accumulated over 605 career appearances. His journey included stints in Spain, Italy, Portugal, Russia, and Canada. The majority of his career was spent at Real Zaragoza, where he tallied 422 appearances during two tenures. He served as the club captain through challenging times, notably after their relegation to the second division.
Contribution to Atletico Ottawa
In the 2023 CPL season, after joining Atletico Ottawa, Zapater played in 69 matches and scored five goals. His influence has been impactful, with CEO Manuel Vega praising his ability to elevate team culture and standards. “My family first came to Ottawa for six months, but it turned into nearly three wonderful years,” said Zapater. He expressed his affection for Canada, noting how the country has felt like home since day one.
