UAB Set to Part Ways with Head Coach Trent Dilfer

UAB is reportedly set to part ways with head coach Trent Dilfer after recent disappointing performances. The decision follows UAB’s significant defeats, including a recent loss to Florida Atlantic under new coach Zach Kittley and another home defeat by Army Black Knights led by Jeff Monken.
Trent Dilfer’s Background
Dilfer, a former Super Bowl-winning quarterback, transitioned from a successful broadcasting career to coaching. He gained recognition at Lipscomb Academy in Nashville, Tennessee, achieving multiple state championships with a 44-10 record. His teams at Lipscomb featured strong quarterback performances and numerous FBS prospects.
The Move to UAB
In December 2022, after his last state championship win at Lipscomb, UAB athletics director Mark Ingram hired Dilfer. He replaced interim coach Bryant Vincent, who stepped in after Bill Clark, the winningest coach in UAB history, retired abruptly.
Challenges at UAB
Dilfer’s tenure faced numerous challenges, including staff hiring issues and navigating a volatile period in major college football. Amidst these challenges, UAB struggled to achieve stability, recording a 3-9 season last year and a 4-8 season in 2023, Dilfer’s first full year.
Financial Considerations
There were previous discussions about replacing Dilfer, but a $4 million buyout was deemed too expensive for UAB. Despite financial constraints, UAB overcame a close game against Alabama State and secured a victory over Akron this season. Nonetheless, they suffered three consecutive losses, each by at least 18 points.
Upcoming Challenges
UAB is preparing to host nationally ranked and undefeated Memphis, led by head coach Ryan Silverfield. Known for their consistent performances, Memphis defeated SEC’s Arkansas last month and currently boasts a 6-0 record, marking a 10-game winning streak — the longest in FBS.
