Israel announces plans for upcoming Monday hostage release and prisoner swap

On Sunday, Israel announced a significant breakthrough in the ongoing conflict with Hamas. The Israeli government stated that it expects all living hostages held in the Gaza Strip to be released on Monday. This development is part of a new phase in the ceasefire agreement aimed at ending the prolonged war.

Hostage Release and Details

Israeli spokesperson Shosh Bedrosian confirmed the release of 20 living hostages. They will be handed over to the Red Cross and transported in six to eight vehicles. The hostages will first be taken to a military base for reunion with their families or immediate medical care if necessary. Following this release, Israel plans to let go of approximately 2,000 Palestinian detainees.

Handling of Deceased Hostages

Israel is also expected to receive the remains of 28 hostages presumed dead. A ceremony in Gaza will honor these individuals, with their bodies sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for identification. An international task force has been established to locate deceased hostages who may not be returned within 72 hours.

Humanitarian Aid Increases

As preparations for the hostage release progress, efforts to increase humanitarian aid in Gaza are underway. The Israeli military anticipates aid deliveries will rise to approximately 600 trucks per day. Egypt has committed to sending 400 aid trucks into the territory, including essential supplies like food, medical equipment, and fuel.

The United Nations has reported a stockpile of about 170,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid ready for delivery. Workers are actively repairing roads to facilitate these aid shipments.

Political Developments and Trump’s Visit

U.S. President Donald Trump is set to visit Israel on Monday, emphasizing the importance of the ceasefire. He will meet families of the released hostages and address the Knesset, Israel’s parliament. Trump is also scheduled to attend a “peace summit” in Egypt with regional leaders.

The Current Situation in Gaza

Gaza residents are returning to their homes, albeit many find their houses in ruins. Reports indicate increased activity along coastal roads, with armed police ensuring the safety of aid trucks in the areas vacated by Israeli forces. The conflict has devastated the region, resulting in approximately 67,000 Palestinian deaths and significant displacement.

As conditions improve temporarily, local authorities are urging members of armed groups to surrender for potential pardon. However, challenges remain, particularly concerning the management of post-war governance in Gaza and the role of Hamas.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has indicated plans for military operations targeting Hamas’ tunnel network once the hostage situation stabilizes.
