Cape Verde Nears Historic First World Cup Qualification with Just One More Victory Needed

The Cape Verde Islands are on the verge of making history by securing their first-ever World Cup qualification. The team needs just one more victory in their upcoming matches to clinch a spot in next year’s tournament.

Cape Verde’s Road to World Cup Qualification

With a population of around 600,000, this archipelago off the west coast of Africa is poised to become the second smallest nation, after Iceland, to reach a World Cup finals. Their journey is critical with two matches remaining: an away game against Libya scheduled for Wednesday and a home game against Eswatini on the following Monday.

Upcoming Matches

  • Libya (Away) – Wednesday
  • Eswatini (Home) – Monday

Winning either match will guarantee Cape Verde top position in Group D and automatic qualification, potentially keeping Cameroon behind.

Recent Achievements and Challenges

Cape Verde has witnessed considerable progress over the past two decades. Previously, they struggled to make their mark on the international football scene, averaging just two matches per year before joining FIFA in 1986. Their first World Cup qualifiers began in 1990, with the team ranked 182nd globally.

A significant setback occurred in their attempt to qualify for the 2014 World Cup when they were denied playoff participation due to a points deduction for fielding an ineligible player. However, they achieved success by reaching the quarter-finals in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013 and again in the latest edition.

Talent Identification and Recruitment

According to Tony Araujo, a long-time agent and former Cape Verde resident, the Cape Verdean Football Association has successfully implemented strategies for identifying and recruiting talent. This initiative focuses on attracting players from the worldwide Cape Verdean Diaspora, significantly improving their performance since 2013.

Scarcity of natural resources and challenging living conditions have historically led to migration from the islands to countries like Portugal, the U.S., and the Netherlands. The current squad features six players born in the Netherlands, along with others from Portugal, France, and Ireland.

The Journey of Roberto Lopes

Roberto “Pico” Lopes, a defender for Shamrock Rovers, shares his experience with recruitment. Initially, he overlooked a message from the then coach, Rui Aguas, but later discovered the opportunity to represent Cape Verde through Google Translate. Lopes stated, “I was absolutely buzzing with that! I was like, ‘yep, 100 percent I’d love to be a part of the squad.’”

Future Prospects and Aspirations

Cape Verde’s recent successes have made it increasingly attractive for European-based players to join their national team. A win in Tripoli would propel them closer to qualification. If they fail to secure a victory against Libya, they are heavily favored to win against Eswatini at home.

The recent triumph over Cameroon ignited celebrations across the islands, and a World Cup qualification would surely amplify this excitement.
