Derelict Newquay Hotel Fire Deemed Inevitable by Local Councillor

A significant fire erupted at the Narrowcliff Hotel, a derelict property in Newquay, Cornwall early Sunday morning. Local authorities have deemed the incident “inevitable” due to ongoing concerns about the building’s neglect.
Details of the Fire Incident
The blaze was reported at approximately 03:15 BST. Fire crews from five different stations responded to the emergency. Upon arrival, they found a fully-developed fire on the hotel’s fourth floor.
Station Manager Andy Hichens from Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service stated that the flames quickly spread “through the roof and right through to the ground floor.” Fortunately, there were no reported injuries from the incident.
Concerns Raised by Local Councillor
Councillor Joanna Kenny, representing Newquay Central and Pentire, expressed worry about the hotel’s condition prior to the fire. She labeled it an “accident waiting to happen” due to its long-standing vacancy and lack of security. According to her, “there’s very little that the councils, either council, can do about it,” as it is classified as private property.
Efforts to Address Derelict Properties
Kenny highlighted that a working group was established to address issues related to derelict buildings in the area. She noted that they were scheduled to inspect other troubled properties later in the week, but the Narrowcliff Hotel has become their primary focus.
