Gordon Makes Swift Return to Wallabies Squad Just Hours After Leaving NRL

Carter Gordon is back with the Wallabies just hours after his departure from the NRL. The 24-year-old fly half has been named in a 34-player squad for the upcoming spring tour, which includes matches against Japan, England, Italy, Ireland, and France.
Quick Return to Rugby Union
Gordon’s unexpected move to rugby union follows a brief stint with the Gold Coast Titans in the NRL. Despite being under contract for another year, he sought an immediate release, which the Titans granted after a comprehensive financial settlement with Rugby Australia (RA).
Shortly after the announcement of his release, Gordon was included in the Wallabies squad, underscoring his quick return to the sport he loves.
Career Highlights and Recent Performance
Before transitioning to the NRL, Gordon showcased his talent with the Melbourne Rebels in Super Rugby Pacific. In 2023, he earned eight Test caps for Australia and made his professional NRL debut in Round 27, but his time with the Titans was affected by a spinal injury.
In a statement, Gordon expressed enthusiasm about returning to rugby union: “I’m stoked to return to the game I grew up playing and loving as a kid.” He is now set to contribute positively to the Wallabies during their tour.
Wallabies Squad and Coaching Changes
Coach Joe Schmidt currently has limited options at the fly half position. Tane Edmed and Hamish Stewart, who has experience but prefers inside centre, will accompany Gordon on the tour. Tom Lynagh was omitted due to fitness concerns.
James O’Connor’s potential involvement remains possible as he plays with Leicester in the English Premiership.
Future with Rugby Australia and Queensland Reds
Gordon has signed a three-year deal with Rugby Australia and the Queensland Reds. Coach Les Kiss sees Gordon’s signing as beneficial for depth in key positions, including fly half, inside centre, and fullback.
Having initially signed with the Reds as a teenager in 2018, Gordon played for the Rebels before earning his first Test cap during the 2023 Rugby Championship.
Upcoming Matches
- Japan – October 25
- England – November 2
- Italy – November 9
- Ireland – November 16
- France – November 23
The Wallabies aim to regain their competitive edge with Gordon’s return. As they prepare for the 2027 World Cup, his experience and skills could significantly benefit the team’s dynamics.
New Faces in the Squad
Among the squad, uncapped players Aidan Ross and Kalani Thomas have drawn attention, indicating potential future stars for the national team.
Overall, the upcoming tour is an opportunity for the Wallabies to strengthen their team and build momentum in international rugby.
