Shaun Wane Unveils England Squad for Exciting ABK Beer Ashes Series

England’s Head Coach Shaun Wane has officially announced a 24-player squad for the much-anticipated ABK Beer Rugby League Ashes series this autumn. The Ashes return marks a significant moment, as it has been over 50 years since England has triumphed in this prestigious competition.
Notable Returns and New Faces
This squad features some exciting additions and notable returns. Joe Burgess, who scored two tries in the recent Betfred Super League Grand Final, is returning to international rugby for the first time since 2015. Joining him is Mikey Lewis, the Rob Burrow Award winner, alongside treble-winning teammate Jez Litten.
AJ Brimson, currently with the Gold Coast Titans, has switched his international eligibility to England through his English mother. In 2025, he achieved 12 tries in 23 NRL appearances. Other NRL players, such as Dom Young and Kai Pearce-Paul from Newcastle Knights, as well as Herbie Farnworth of the Dolphins and North Queensland’s John Bateman, are also part of this competitive lineup.
Key Players
- Joe Burgess – Hull KR
- Mikey Lewis – Hull KR
- AJ Brimson – Gold Coast Titans
- John Bateman – North Queensland Cowboys
- Kallum Watkins – Leeds Rhinos
Owen Trout, who has shown impressive form with the Leigh Leopards, could potentially make his England debut during the Ashes. Additionally, Kallum Watkins and Alex Walmsley are making a return after brief absences from the international scene.
Exciting Matches Ahead
Wane expressed his enthusiasm regarding the selected players. He acknowledged that choosing the squad was challenging due to the high level of talent in both the Super League and NRL. The coach expressed confidence that this team would be formidable against the Australian side.
“The return of The Ashes presents us an opportunity to create history,” Wane stated. “We aim to defeat the Kangaroos and achieve our first victory in this series in over half a century.”
Match Details
Tickets remain available for the series opener between England and Australia, set to take place at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, October 25th. The atmosphere at Wembley is expected to be electric, with two venues already sold out for the series.
