Stay Alert as Asian Hornet Confirmed in Belfast Breaking Records

The Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) has confirmed the first sighting of an Asian Hornet in Belfast. The hornet was identified in the Dundonald area on October 10, 2025, by a vigilant resident. This invasive species, also known as the Yellow-legged hornet, poses a significant threat to local biodiversity.

Background on the Asian Hornet

The Asian Hornet is originally from East Asia. It first appeared in Europe in 2004 and has been increasingly recorded in southern England. Earlier this summer, two nests were discovered and destroyed in Cork, Ireland.

This species is a known predator of various insects, including honeybees and other pollinators like hoverflies. Its aggressive feeding behavior can severely disrupt native insect populations and impact pollination services.

Response and Monitoring Efforts

Following this sighting, the NIEA has taken immediate action. They have initiated a monitoring program that includes live traps and visual surveys to assess whether the observed hornet was part of a nest.

In case additional Asian Hornets are found, authorities will conduct intensive monitoring and removal efforts. The NIEA is collaborating with the National Biodiversity Data Centre under the Shared Island Biosecurity and Invasive Species Initiative for effective response strategies.

Public Awareness and Actions

Andrew Muir, the Minister for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, has emphasized the urgency of the situation. He stated the importance of public vigilance against this harmful species. Muir acknowledged the individual who reported the hornet and encouraged others to remain alert.

The NIEA published the Northern Ireland Rapid Response Contingency Plan for the Asian Hornet in 2020. This proactive measure aims to equip the public and authorities with strategies to address any further sightings. The plan is currently under review alongside the Invasive Alien Species Strategy for Northern Ireland.

How to Report Sightings

The public is encouraged to report any suspected Asian Hornet sightings. Ideally, observers should provide a photograph when reporting. The following resources are available for reporting:

It is crucial that suspected nests are not disturbed and are reported immediately to the NIEA. With ongoing vigilance, the spread of this invasive species can potentially be controlled.
