LSU’s Lacy Reached Speeds of 88 MPH Before Tragic Crash Report Reveals

An investigation into a fatal car crash involving former LSU wide receiver Kyren Lacy has unveiled critical details. The report, released by the Lafourche Parish District Attorney’s Office, indicated that Lacy was driving at 88 mph in a 40 mph zone before a tragic collision occurred on December 17, 2024.
Details of the Crash
According to the investigation, Lacy’s Dodge Charger was traveling on Louisiana Highway 20 and entered a no-passing zone. He passed four vehicles and re-entered the southbound lane approximately 92.3 yards from the crash site. The incident resulted in the death of Herman Hall, aged 78, who succumbed to his injuries hours after the collision.
Chain of Events Leading to the Collision
- A northbound pickup truck driver, fearing an imminent collision with Lacy, turned into a parking lot.
- A Kia Cadenza, following too closely behind the truck, swerved to avoid a collision, causing an impact with Hall’s vehicle.
Legal Proceedings and Findings
Lacy faced charges including felony negligent homicide, hit-and-run, and reckless driving. The Lafourche Parish District Attorney’s Office was preparing to present the case for grand jury indictment on April 14, 2025. However, Lacy passed away on April 12 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a police pursuit in Houston.
Discrepancies in Investigation
Investigator Warren Callais highlighted inconsistencies in the Louisiana State Police report. Notably, discrepancies included incorrect audio synchronization in video evidence, which misrepresented Lacy’s proximity to the collision. Despite these issues, the police maintained that Lacy’s reckless driving initiated the series of events leading to the crash.
Statements from Authorities
Liz Murrill, Louisiana Attorney General, said the green Charger’s excessive speed and illegal passing were undeniable, despite unclear indictment specifics. The Louisiana State Police confirmed the accuracy of their investigative methods, including eyewitness accounts and video analysis. The district attorney’s office, however, has remained tight-lipped about proceeding with the grand jury amid these revelations.
The legal complexities and tragic circumstances surrounding this accident have brought attention to road safety and the exhaustive process of legal investigations.
