Virgin Australia is set to implement a revised baggage policy starting February 2, 2026. This decision comes amidst a global trend of airlines tightening carry-on regulations. The airline aims to optimize overhead space, thereby reducing boarding delays and enhancing overall passenger safety.

According to Chris Snook, the Chief Operations Officer at Virgin Australia, the changes are driven by feedback from both team members and passengers. The airline plans to address the growing problem of overcrowded overhead bins, ensuring that travelers can store their bags conveniently.
New Carry-On Allowances
The revised policy outlines specific allowances for different classes:
- Economy Class: Passengers may bring one carry-on bag weighing up to 8kg and a small personal item, such as a handbag or laptop bag. The personal item must fit under the seat in front and cannot exceed dimensions of 45cm x 33cm x 20cm.
- Business Class and Elite Members: Passengers in business class, as well as Gold, Forever Gold, Platinum, and Platinum Plus Velocity members, can carry up to two bags with a total weight of 14kg. One bag can weigh up to 8kg.
Additional Policies for Families
Families traveling with infants will be allowed one additional small personal item, such as a diaper bag. Moreover, a collapsible stroller will count as one standard carry-on item, and it must fit within the dimensions of 56cm x 36cm x 23cm. Parents can also check in up to three infant items free of charge.

This policy change is part of a widespread movement among airlines to tighten baggage restrictions. Recently, Air Canada faced backlash for charging passengers for carry-ons larger than a small handbag. Similarly, United Airlines only allows a small carry-on bag with its basic economy fares.
