First Ever Asian Hornet Sighting Confirmed by Northern Ireland Environment Agency

The Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) has confirmed the first-ever sighting of an Asian hornet in Northern Ireland. The hornet was discovered in the Dundonald area on October 10, 2023, by a member of the public.

Government Response to Asian Hornet Sighting

Following the sighting, Environment Minister Andrew Muir emphasized the significance of the incident. “This is a solitary Asian hornet, but a departmental response is underway to ensure that no other Asian hornets are present,” he stated.

The presence of Asian hornets has been a growing concern in other regions. Numerous individual hornets and nests have been recorded in southern England. Additionally, two nests were destroyed in County Cork earlier this summer. Although Asian hornets do not pose a greater threat to humans than native hornets, they significantly impact local ecosystems.

Threat to Native Species

  • Asian hornets prey on over 1,000 species.
  • Key targets include honey bees, bumble bees, butterflies, and beetles.

These insects present a substantial threat to native wildlife, particularly pollinators that play a critical role in maintaining ecological balance. Minister Muir expressed concerns about their potential establishment in Northern Ireland, stating, “This is a harmful species that I do not wish to see becoming established here.” He highlighted the implications for both biosecurity and local ecology.

Monitoring and Public Awareness Initiative

The NIEA has initiated a monitoring program, which includes setting up live traps and conducting visual surveys. This effort aims to determine whether the sighting was an isolated incident or if a nest is present nearby.

If further Asian hornets are detected, intensive monitoring will be implemented to locate and remove any nests. The NIEA encourages public vigilance. Citizens are urged to report any suspected Asian hornet sightings, ideally with photographic evidence, to the Department of Agriculture, Environment, and Rural Affairs (DAERA).

This proactive approach aims to prevent the establishment of Asian hornets in Northern Ireland and protect local biodiversity.
