Hughesy Hospitalized Again Following Rib Fracture

Comedian Dave “Hughesy” Hughes has encountered a health setback just two months after suffering serious injuries during an AFL charity match. The 54-year-old is currently hospitalized for the second time, facing a procedure to remove fluid from his lung. Despite his condition, he maintains a positive outlook, assuring fans that it appears “more dramatic than it is.”
Latest Hospitalization Details
In an Instagram video filmed from his hospital bed, Hughes explained the situation. “Apparently fluid on your lungs is not a good thing, so we’re getting rid of it,” he stated. He humorously added that medical staff are draining several liters of lung fluid into a bag.
Hughes remains upbeat despite the circumstances. He remarked that the noise in the hospital, particularly the beeping machines, is more bothersome than the physical pain itself. “Would someone shut the fridge up, for fk’s sake,” he joked in a follow-up video.
Background of His Injuries
Hughes sustained five broken ribs and a punctured lung in late August at the AFL Legends Game at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne. As the oldest player on the field, he played through pain until his wife rushed him to Cabrini Hospital’s ICU. It was there that doctors revealed the severity of his injuries.
During a radio interview with FOX FM, Hughes described the discomfort caused by the injury. “Still having struggles talking, I just had an Endone,” he explained, noting that any deep breaths are painful due to the hole in his lung. He recounted his realization of the injury during halftime, stating he had joked about having a punctured lung, only to find out it was true.
Circumstances of the Incident
In the match, Hughes faced significant collisions, first with former West Coast Eagle Andrew Embley and later with Daniel Gorringe. Despite the tough moments, he attempted to continue playing. Doctors expect his recovery will take between six to eight weeks.
Hughes expressed his frustration with the healing process. “I’ve never had broken ribs before, and they are something that does hang around,” he remarked on Sunrise. He added that while he usually enjoys laughter, the current situation has dampened his spirit.
Hughesy’s Resilience
Despite his ongoing health challenges, Hughes continues to share updates and maintain a sense of humor. His resilience in the face of adversity resonates with fans as he navigates this difficult time.
