Starmer Highlights How Recognising Palestine Contributed to Gaza Peace Efforts to MPs

In a recent address to MPs, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer emphasized the role of recognizing Palestine in fostering peace efforts in Gaza. This statement followed his participation in a peace summit held in Egypt.
Recognizing Palestine’s Impact on Gaza Peace Efforts
Starmer highlighted that the UK was uniquely positioned to facilitate a ceasefire due to its diplomatic approach, which included acknowledging Palestine as a state. This recognition, along with support from allies such as France, Canada, and Australia, contributed to a significant declaration by the Arab League. For the first time, the league condemned the October 7 atrocities and called for Hamas to disarm.
The Role of the Peace Deal
During his remarks, Starmer noted that the peace agreement, signed recently, was largely attributable to former US President Donald Trump. The deal was formalized at a ceremony in Sharm El Sheikh, involving negotiators from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, while representatives from Israel and Hamas were notably absent. The initiative saw the release of 20 Israeli hostages by Hamas, while Israel freed over 1,900 Palestinian prisoners as part of the first deal phase.
Prospects for Long-Term Peace
Starmer described the agreement as a source of “profound relief” but cautioned that it represented merely a chance to end a tumultuous chapter in the region’s history. The next steps will involve negotiations on the second phase of the deal, focusing on disarming Hamas—a prospect that the group has reportedly rejected. Additionally, the reconstruction of Gaza will be overseen by a “peace board,” potentially featuring Trump and former Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Challenges Ahead
Starmer acknowledged the complexities of maintaining this peace, stating, “While we celebrate the relief of peace today, making that peace last will be no less a difficult task.” He indicated that the UK stands ready to leverage its diplomatic capabilities in three critical areas to support lasting peace.
Humanitarian Aid and Concerns
Moreover, Starmer urged for the remains of deceased hostages to be returned promptly to their families and requested Israel to lift all restrictions on aid entering Gaza. To assist in humanitarian efforts, the UK will allocate an additional £20 million designated for water, sanitation, and hygiene products for those affected in the territory.
Political Reactions
While Starmer defended his government’s diplomatic strategy, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch criticized the approach. She argued that recognizing Palestine has weakened the UK’s influence in the region and strained relations with Israel.
This ongoing dialogue between political leaders illustrates the complexities involved in navigating peace in the Middle East, underscoring the delicate balance required to support both humanitarian needs and diplomatic relations.
