Major Power Outage Hits Multiple Brazilian States Due to Substation Fire
A major power outage impacted several Brazilian states early Tuesday morning after a fire broke out at an Eletrobras substation. This incident caused a total shutdown of around 10,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity, affecting over 1 million consumers nationwide.
Details of the Incident
The fire occurred in a reactor located in southern Brazil, prompting the immediate shutdown of the facility. It significantly disrupted electricity distribution, as the substation was exporting approximately 5,000 MW acrosse the country, according to Brazil’s National Electric System Operator (ONS).
Regional Impacts
- South Region: Loss of 1,600 MW
 - Northeast Region: Loss of 1,900 MW
 - North Region: Loss of 1,600 MW
 - Southeast Region: Loss of 4,800 MW

To manage the crisis, an automatic protection mechanism was activated. This system is designed to disconnect power during disturbances to maintain overall stability.
Official Responses
Brazil’s Mines and Energy Minister, Alexandre Silveira, described the blackout as an isolated incident linked to infrastructure rather than energy shortages. “This was a one-off episode that ONS responded to promptly,” he stated in an interview.
The ONS confirmed that equipment restoration and load recovery started safely within minutes, with all loads being restored in approximately two and a half hours.
Investigation and Follow-up
Eletrobras announced it would collaborate with ONS to investigate the fire’s causes and the resulting system disturbance. Additionally, electricity distributors, including Light and Enel São Paulo, reported that at least 1.3 million people were affected by the blackout.
Moving forward, authorities hope to ensure improvements in infrastructure to prevent future outages. The swift response from ONS and Eletrobras is a vital step in maintaining energy security across Brazil.
