AGL Accelerates Expansion of Wind and Battery Infrastructure

AGL Energy is making significant strides towards transforming its energy portfolio. The company is focused on phasing out coal-fired generation by the year 2035. To replace this coal capacity, AGL plans to deliver 12 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy supported by battery storage.
Commitment to Renewable Energy and Battery Infrastructure
During an interview ahead of the Citi investor conference, AGL’s Chief Financial Officer, Gary Brown, emphasized the company’s dedication to renewable energy. He stated that AGL is committed to accelerating the deployment of battery technology and enhancing their generation flexibility.
Progress on Key Projects
AGL has made notable progress on both wind and battery projects that are expected to support this transition. Brown highlighted two key projects:
- Liddell Battery: Currently under construction, this battery is a significant step towards AGL’s transition goals.
- Tomago Battery: Recently reached a final investment decision, marking a pivotal moment for the project.
These developments are crucial as AGL seeks to bolster its renewable energy commitment. The company also operates existing battery facilities at:
- Torrens Island
- Broken Hill
Strategic Transition to Sustainable Energy
AGL’s strategy includes a combination of renewable energy sources and gas peaking plants. This mixed approach aims to ensure a stable and flexible energy supply during the transition away from coal. The initiatives outlined by Brown reflect AGL’s proactive steps towards a sustainable energy future.
As the energy landscape evolves, AGL Energy’s commitment to its renewable targets is becoming increasingly clear. With ongoing investments in battery and wind infrastructure, the company is well-positioned to lead in the shift towards a cleaner energy economy.
