Alexi Lalas Tempers Expectations for Haji Wright’s USMNT Call-Up Amid Josh Sargent’s Challenges at Coventry Championship Team

As the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) prepares for their October clashes against Ecuador and Australia, attention turns to striker Haji Wright’s potential impact amid Josh Sargent’s difficulties at Coventry Championship team.

Alexi Lalas on Striker Selections

Alexi Lalas, former U.S. defender and current FOX Sports analyst, has tempered expectations for Wright’s USMNT call-up. Lalas recently discussed the ongoing competition among American strikers, emphasizing the importance of seizing opportunities when they arise.

Josh Sargent’s Challenges

Highlighting Sargent’s case, Lalas notes the Norwich City forward’s early season form was a high point in August, earning him Player of the Month in the Championship. However, this success did not extend to the national team, as Sargent struggled during a match against South Korea in September.

Lalas observed, “We saw what happened with Josh Sargent. His situation presents challenges at both club and national levels.” Sargent’s difficulties led to diminished national team prospects, impacting his contribution to Norwich as well.

Evaluating Wright’s Prospects

  • With Ricardo Pepi facing injuries, Lalas acknowledges Wright’s abilities, stating, “He will continue to at least get a look.”
  • Lalas also mentioned the potential for discoveries in England’s second division, pointing to Derby County’s Patrick Agyemang as an additional option.

“It remains European soccer,” Lalas said, warning against overestimating players’ abilities based on club affiliation alone. Nevertheless, he noted the importance of finding capable strikers.

Striker Competition Intensifies

The completion for national team roles among American forwards has intensified. Wright and Sargent have netted a combined total of 10 goals in 46 appearances, while Pepi has scored 13 goals in 33 caps. Meanwhile, Agyemang has shown capability with five goals in 12 matches.

While Balogun demonstrated promise in the Copa América and a match against Japan, the striker positions remain competitive. Manager Mauricio Pochettino will evaluate talent during October’s international fixtures.
