Kildare Business Hit with Food Safety Prohibition Order
A food business in Kildare has recently been banned from selling its products due to health concerns. BK Foods Limited, based in Clongorey, Newbridge, Co Kildare, was one of five entities that received prohibition orders from the Food Safety Authority (FSA) in September.
Prohibition Orders Overview
Prohibition orders are issued when the handling or sale of food poses a significant risk to public safety. This risk can arise from specific products, batches, or classes of food. These orders may be temporary or permanent.
Incidents Leading to Orders
Alongside the prohibition orders, the FSA also enforced five closure orders on various food businesses for violations of food safety regulations. Notable issues included:
- Presence of rats and rat droppings in food storage areas.
- Sale of food past its expiration date.
- Lack of staff training on food safety protocols.
- No access to soap or hot water in food preparation areas.
Closure Orders Issued
The majority of enforcement notices were aimed at businesses in Dublin. Some of the significant closures included:
- SuperValu Hollyhill, Hollyhill Shopping Centre, Co Cork.
- Wok In Noodle Bar, 48-50 Stephen Street Lower, Dublin 2.
Notable Cases Under Regulations
Two of the closure orders were issued under the European Union (Official Controls in Relation to Food Legislation) Regulations 2020. The affected businesses were:
- New Leaf, Skerries, Co Dublin (Take Away).
- The MOMO House, Letterkenny, Co Donegal (Take Away).
Additional Prohibition Orders
Two further prohibition orders were enacted under the FSAI Act 1998 for:
- Vitalorganico located in Castleknock, Co Dublin.
- Duud in Blanchardstown, Dublin 15.
Three prohibition orders issued under European Union regulations affected:
- Nearby Cashel, Co Tipperary.
- XL Convenience Store, Drumconrath, Co Meath.
- BK Foods Limited, Clongorey, Newbridge, Co Kildare.
This enforcement highlights the ongoing scrutiny by the Food Safety Authority to maintain high health standards in food businesses across Ireland.
