Dublin’s South Inner City Embraces New Era with Installation of Waste Compactors Ending Bin Bag Dependence

In Dublin’s South Inner City, a significant transformation is underway with the installation of large waste compactors. This change marks the end of reliance on bin bags across 90 streets in the area.

Introduction of Waste Compactors

Last year, Dublin City Council announced plans to eliminate the use of refuse sacks for about 1,500 businesses and residents starting in 2025. However, the transition was delayed as only 35% of current bin-bag users opted for wheelie bins. To address this, the council has now implemented the installation of waste compactors.

Details of the Installation

These compactors, comparable in size to small caravans, have recently been placed at key locations, including:

  • Fownes Street, next to the former Central Bank in Temple Bar
  • Stephen’s Green East, near public toilets at the top of Grafton Street

The compactors measure about four meters long and nearly 2.5 meters tall. Access to these sealed containers is restricted; only residents and businesses issued access cards by their waste companies can open them.

Services for Waste Disposal

Many customers are choosing a direct collection service provided by waste companies. This service employs cargo bikes to collect bags directly from customers and transport them to the compactor sites. According to Derek Kelly, the executive manager of the council’s environment division, around 90% of customers prefer this door-to-door collection method.

Future Plans

Dublin City Council plans to extend this compactor system to the North Inner City in early 2024. Following this, the ban on bin bags will be enforced throughout all inner city business districts. The council is also exploring options for residential areas unsuitable for wheelie bins. Potential solutions might involve smaller sealed bins operated with access cards, similar to the existing compactors.

Background on Bin Bag Legislation

Legislation prohibiting refuse sacks has been in effect since 2016. However, many Dublin residents and businesses were exempted due to unsuitable property conditions, mainly in city center areas or inner suburbs lacking gardens. The council aims to eliminate plastic refuse sacks that have contributed to litter, often torn by seagulls or animals.

This initiative signifies a new era for waste management in Dublin’s South Inner City, focusing on sustainability and improved urban cleanliness.
