Semjén Zsolt Highlights Hungary’s Transformation into a Global Nation with Billion-Dollar Programs Boosting the Diaspora

Semjén Zsolt, Hungary’s Deputy Prime Minister, recently emphasized the nation’s evolving status as a global nation. He cited historical factors rather than intentional decision-making as the driving forces behind this transformation. In his address, he branded the current situation both a challenge and a significant opportunity.
Strategic Importance of the Diaspora
Semjén highlighted the critical role of diaspora communities for Hungary. He believes these communities act as a strategic stronghold for the Hungarian nation, serving various cultural, economic, and political purposes in their host countries. He underscored the constitutional responsibility of Hungary towards every Hungarian citizen, regardless of where they live.
Financial Support for Diaspora Communities
The financial commitment to support Hungarians abroad has surged dramatically. In 2010, the funding was merely 9 billion forints, which increased tenfold in the subsequent year. To date, approximately 1.6 trillion forints have been allocated to assist diaspora communities. Semjén stated that further increases in support are expected, ensuring that the Hungarian state provides essential resources for preserving Hungarian identity.
- The Hazaváró program aims to serve as a safety net for Hungarians abroad in crisis situations.
- Though many in the diaspora do not require shelter, some, like Venezuelan Hungarians, have needed repatriation assistance.
- Religious institutions and scouting organizations play vital roles in maintaining the diaspora’s connection to Hungarian culture.
Successful Nation-Building Programs
The Kőrösi Csoma Sándor Program, lauded as a significant success, aims to establish community points for Hungarians abroad. This program is expanding to include countries like Iceland and Lithuania. Thus far, around 1,100 scholars have participated in the Kőrösi and Petőfi Sándor Programs, which aim to deepen diaspora ties with Hungary.
Education Initiatives for Diaspora Students
In a bid to strengthen these connections, a new scholarship system has been instituted. This initiative has already welcomed 236 students from the Western diaspora for higher education, with an additional 164 expected from thirty countries this year.
Promoting National Identity
Semjén also touched upon Hungary’s efforts to unify the Hungarian nation legally, mentioning that 1.2 million individuals have acquired Hungarian citizenship through this initiative. He reiterated that every individual wishing to maintain their Hungarian heritage receives necessary support.
Future Initiatives and Challenges
This year, 70 representatives from 31 countries, including Japanese and Cypriot Hungarians, participated in a national policy conference. Officials like Nacsa Lőrinc have warned that current times are characterized by threats such as migration and security challenges, emphasizing the importance of defining national objectives and retaining community ties.
Upcoming projects include the “Erősödő diaszpóra” funding initiative with 500 million forints allocated for grants, equally distributed between Europe and other regions. New announcements regarding the Kőrösi Csoma Sándor Program are due by November 10, expanding participation opportunities.
As Hungary continues to evolve as a global nation, the government remains committed to investing in its diaspora through various programs that promote identity, education, and community support.
