Former Hull Funeral Director Confesses to 35 Fraud Charges Following Investigation of Remains at Premises

Former Hull funeral director Robert Bush has pleaded guilty to 35 fraud charges after an investigation into the handling of human remains. The 47-year-old also admitted to one count of fraudulent trading associated with funeral plans during a hearing at Hull Crown Court.

Charges and Court Proceedings

Bush faced multiple allegations including preventing lawful burial and theft from charities, to which he pleaded not guilty. His trial for these charges is set to take place at Sheffield Crown Court next year.

Investigation Background

The Humberside Police initiated an investigation into Bush’s funeral home following reports in March of last year, expressing concerns regarding the treatment of deceased individuals. In just a month, police received over 2,000 calls from families worried about the handling of their loved ones’ ashes.

Details of Fraudulent Activities

According to police, the investigation into Bush’s operations spanned ten months and involved three sites in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire. The fraud charges mainly relate to claims made to bereaved families regarding the care and cremation of deceased individuals.

  • Assured families he would properly care for the remains of the deceased.
  • Promised immediate cremation following the funeral service.
  • Misrepresented ashes by claiming they were the remains of the deceased after cremation.

Additionally, Bush admitted to four charges related to the presentation of ashes to a customer, falsely claiming they were the remains of their unborn child.

Next Steps

Currently out on bail, Bush awaits his trial for the remaining charges. The case has raised significant public concern regarding funeral home practices and the treatment of human remains.
