South Perth Celebrates Historic Win with Record-Breaking Emerging Art Award

The City of South Perth has marked a significant milestone with its Emerging Artist Award, hosting a record number of entries this year. Rivervale’s Janice Oliver has clinched the top accolade, receiving the award for her compelling black-and-white print titled “Come Fly with Me.” This artwork delves into themes surrounding loss, particularly in connection with the 1968 Meckering earthquake.

Janice Oliver: A Rising Star in the Art World

Janice Oliver, an agricultural scientist turned artist, was awarded the $5,000 Emerging Artist Award. In addition to the cash prize, she will feature her work at Heritage House. Upon receiving the honor, Oliver expressed her gratitude, stating, “Thank you so much to the City of South Perth for believing in emerging artists no matter their age or where they’re from.”

Record-Breaking Participation

This year’s competition attracted over 250 submissions from across Western Australia, setting a new record. From the Fitzroy Valley in the West Kimberley to the Great Southern region, artists submitted a diverse range of entries. Among these, 128 pieces were selected as finalists for the exhibition, which includes photography, sculpture, wearable art, painting, and printmaking.

Support for Local Artists

South Perth Mayor Greg Milner highlighted the importance of this event, noting the city’s commitment to nurturing local talent. “The City of South Perth is thrilled to support WA’s emerging artists,” Milner remarked. “This year’s outstanding response shows the remarkable creativity within our community.”

Judges’ Recognition

The judging panel, comprised of Corine Van Hall, Abdul-Rahman Abdullah, and Ron Bradfield Jr., praised Oliver’s work for its emotional depth. They remarked, “This work is a beautiful exploration of loss,” highlighting the innovative techniques used in its creation, including the application of agricultural fertilizer to enhance the narrative.
