Oklahoma Football Shocker: Brent Venables Confirms Receiver’s Departure from Program

Brent Venables, head coach of Oklahoma’s football team, has confirmed that wide receiver Jayden Gibson has left the program. This announcement was made during his weekly SEC teleconference, though he did not provide further details about the decision. Prior to the teleconference, Gibson’s name was still on the University of Oklahoma’s athletic roster but has since been removed.
Gibson Expresses Gratitude
After news of his departure broke, Gibson took to social media platform X, expressing his gratitude towards the Sooners with a simple “thank you ou ”— a post dated October 15, 2025. Gibson has had a challenging recent history with injuries, missing the entire 2024 season due to a knee injury. Furthermore, he did not make an appearance in Oklahoma’s first six games of 2025.
Injury Challenges
During the spring, Venables had addressed Gibson’s injury status. On March 25, he mentioned that Gibson was running routes but might have faced a slight setback. Venables awaited a final assessment before making further public comments. Despite these hopes, Gibson had not taken the field this season.
Past Achievements and Early Promise
Gibson’s most productive season was in 2023, when the Sooners ended with a 10-3 record and played in the Alamo Bowl. In that year, he recorded 14 receptions for 375 yards and five touchdowns. He notably scored in each of the team’s last three regular-season games and made his first start in the Alamo Bowl, which Oklahoma lost to Arizona. As a freshman in 2022, he primarily contributed on special teams, catching a single pass for 12 yards against TCU during his nine games of action.
High School Recruitment and Team Status
The receiver, a highly rated 4-star recruit from Florida, had been pursued by top programs including Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, and Miami before choosing Oklahoma. Despite Gibson’s absence, Oklahoma has maintained strong performances from its receiving corps this season. Transfer Isaiah Sategna has impressed with 420 yards and three touchdowns over the first six games. Additionally, Jaren Kanak and Deion Burks have accumulated 348 and 339 yards, respectively, surpassing the top 2024 season mark by tight end Bauer Sharp, which was 324 yards.
Upcoming Match for Oklahoma
Oklahoma is set to face South Carolina on Saturday. This game is a chance for the Sooners to recover from their recent 23-6 defeat to Texas in the Red River Rivalry.
