UK TV Streaming Scene Heats Up: Rival to iPlayer Expands Free Content Selection

Channel 4 is gearing up to enhance its streaming offerings with a significant collaboration. A multi-year agreement has been established with UKTV, the operator behind the U channels and streaming services in the UK.
Expansion of Free Content Selection
This partnership will allow Channel 4 to incorporate U programming starting January 2026. As a result, viewers can expect to see an expanded library of content available through the Channel 4 app.
Notable Shows Coming to Channel 4
The deal includes a range of popular shows, such as:
- The Office
- Red Dwarf
- QI
- Big Zuu’s Big Eats
These additions will significantly increase the diversity of programming available, positioning Channel 4 more competitively against other streaming platforms like BBC iPlayer and ITVX.
Launch Details
From day one in January, viewers will have access to U’s catch-up content and boxsets. This content acquisition aims to attract a broader audience, particularly younger viewers who prefer streaming services.
Comments from Channel 4 Leadership
Jonathan Allan, the interim CEO of Channel 4, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. He stated, “It’s fantastic that we are building on our long and successful commercial partnership with a bold new deal with UKTV to make our streaming proposition even stronger for viewers.”
Additional Streaming Initiatives
The deal with UKTV is part of Channel 4’s ongoing efforts to enhance its streaming services. Recently, the network also launched three exclusive live channels on the Freely platform:
- 4Reality
- 4Homes
- 4Life
These channels provide viewers with more options for watching Channel 4’s content in a linear format, streamed rather than via traditional broadcast methods.
Cost Options
Channel 4’s streaming services are free to users. However, for a monthly fee of £3.99, viewers can opt for an ad-free experience on the app.
