Vodafone Unveils Reason Behind Major Internet Outage as Compensation Demands Rise

Vodafone recently experienced a significant disruption in its internet services, affecting numerous customers nationwide. The company clarified that this outage was not a result of a cyber attack.

Details of the Internet Outage

The incident occurred on Monday afternoon, impacting broadband, 4G, and 5G services due to a software issue with a vendor partner. According to Vodafone’s spokesperson, the problem has since been resolved, and normal service has resumed.

Extent of the Impact

  • Over 130,000 users reported service issues on Downdetector.
  • Vodafone’s app, website, and customer service functionalities were also affected.

Customer Concerns and Compensation Demands

In the wake of the outage, customers took to social media and news outlets, inquiring about potential compensation for the inconvenience. One user expressed frustration, stating they would consider canceling their contract if compensation was not provided.

Compensation Guidelines

Telecoms expert Sabrina Hoque from Uswitch noted that customers might be eligible for compensation of £9.76 for each day of broadband disruption, but only if the outage lasts more than two days. Ofcom specifies that compensation for mobile services varies based on specific circumstances.

Despite the outage being short-lived for most users, the possibility of compensation claims remains. Melanie Pizzey, chief executive of the Global Payroll Alliance, warned that Vodafone could face numerous claims if financial losses arise from the service disruption.

Caution Against Scams

Amid the disruption, there have been reports of scams targeting Vodafone customers. Scammers posed as company representatives, instructing users to download applications to receive compensation. This has raised concerns about ongoing fraudulent activities.

While Vodafone has apologized for the inconvenience, it remains to be seen how the company will handle the rising demands for compensation following this major internet outage.
