Former Marine and Vice President JD Vance Joins Camp Pendleton in Celebrating US Marine Corps 250th Anniversary

Vice President JD Vance will visit Camp Pendleton to participate in activities marking the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Marine Corps. Vance, a former Marine, joins other notable figures, including Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Secretary of the Navy John C. Phelan, for the event.

Amphibious Demonstration at Camp Pendleton

The event, “America’s Marines 250: From Sea to Shore – A Review of Amphibious Strength,” is scheduled for October 18. It includes a demonstration of amphibious vehicles and aircraft landing on the base’s shoreline. The Camp Pendleton exercise aims to certify crew members in essential skills using Assault Combat Vehicles (ACVs), replacing older Amphibious Assault Vehicles (AAVs).

Anniversary Celebrations

The Marine Corps began its anniversary celebrations in January, including numerous public events across the United States. These celebrations will culminate with the Commandant’s Birthday Ball in Washington, DC, in November. The upcoming Camp Pendleton demonstration is part of this yearlong series of events.

The Significance of Camp Pendleton

  • Opened in the 1940s, it spans 125,000 acres and offers 17.5 miles of shoreline.
  • Features extensive amphibious training ranges vital for Marine readiness.
  • Hosts 85% of the Defense Department’s airspace for training.

The location has strategic importance, providing unique opportunities for amphibious training, especially with a focus on the Indo-Pacific region.

Marine Corps Overhauls and Readiness

Post-2020 reforms following a tragic incident involving AAVs have led to improvements in amphibious training and equipment. Brig. Gen. Nick Brown emphasized Camp Pendleton’s role in maintaining Marine readiness and preparing forces for diverse missions.

Impacts of Government Shutdown

The event takes place amid concerns of a prolonged federal government shutdown. However, according to House Speaker Mike Johnson, military paychecks due October 15 will be issued using approximately $8 billion in redirected Pentagon funds.

San Clemente’s Mayor, Steve Knoblock, highlights the community’s strong military ties and support. The city views the Marine base as integral to national security and freedoms, with residents proud to host such pivotal events.

As celebrations continue, Vice President Vance and other leaders are expected to deliver speeches at Camp Pendleton, reinforcing the Marine Corps’ enduring legacy and future commitments.
