Watchdog Calls on Bridget Phillipson to Accelerate Trans Guidance Implementation

Pressure is mounting on the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) as 32 Labour MPs have urged it to revisit recent draft guidance. They argue that the guidance could potentially lead to discrimination and harassment against transgender individuals.

Concerns Over EHRC Guidance

Among those voicing concerns is Lucy Powell, a prominent figure in Labour’s leadership race. Powell, who is contesting for the deputy leadership position, noted during a recent fringe event at Labour’s annual conference that the language used in the draft guidance is problematic.

She believes that the MPs should be given an opportunity to vote on the matter. Powell stated, “We need a robust and transparent parliamentary conversation about the guidance. Parliamentarians must have a say in applying the law.”

Government’s Stance

A government spokesperson remarked that the draft updated code is currently under review. If approved, it will be presented to Parliament. The proposed code of practice is extensive, spanning over 300 pages, highlighting the need for a thorough process.

Labour Leadership Contest

As these discussions unfold, Labour members are actively participating in the election to choose a new deputy leader, following Angela Rayner’s departure from the role. The ballot is set to conclude on 23 October, with results expected to be announced on 25 October.
