Discover Samhain: Experience Fire Folklore and Feasting in Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands

This year, Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands in Longford and Westmeath is launching an exciting initiative named ‘Ireland, Home of Halloween.’ This campaign celebrates Samhain, the ancient Celtic festival, in the very landscapes where it originated. The official announcement took place at Pig Market Lane in Longford Town, marking the counties as one of seven Home of Halloween Hubs across the nation.
Highlighting the Festivals of Samhain
The programme features three main festivals: the Dead of Night Festival in County Longford, Féile na Samhna at Corlea Trackway, and Samhain on Uisneach. Each festival has a unique character, yet collectively they celebrate fire, folklore, and community spirit.
- Dead of Night Festival: A captivating event across Longford, offering both daytime family activities and atmospheric night events.
- Féile na Samhna: Celebrating the preserved Iron Age road at Corlea Trackway with guided walks and interpretive experiences.
- Samhain on Uisneach: A gathering at the Hill of Uisneach, showcasing the ceremonial heart of Ireland with a blend of tradition and creativity.
In total, more than 30 events make up this rich seasonal programme suitable for all ages and interests. Activities range from storytelling and craft workshops to haunted town tours and pumpkin patches, ensuring a diverse experience for both locals and visitors.
Collaborative Efforts for Cultural Tourism
The initiative aims to extend the tourism season in Longford and Westmeath, making it a focal point for cultural celebrations. Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council, Cllr Garry Murtagh, emphasized the transformative nature of this partnership. The aim is to create a lasting impact on local communities and enhance cultural tourism.
