Legendary KISS Guitarist Passes Away Following Brain Hemorrhage

Ace Frehley, the original lead guitarist and co-founder of the legendary rock band KISS, has passed away at the age of 74. His family confirmed this tragic news in a statement to Variety, expressing their heartbreak and sorrow over his loss.

Frehley’s family stated, “We are completely devastated and heartbroken,” reflecting on their cherished memories of his kindness and laughter. They emphasized that the impact of his passing is profound and that his legacy will endure.

Ace Frehley’s Medical Condition

Prior to his death, Frehley had been hospitalized due to a brain hemorrhage resulting from a fall in his studio. Reports indicate that he was placed on life support shortly before he died. Earlier, on September 25, Frehley had informed fans via Instagram about his minor fall. He reassured them that he was okay, although his doctor recommended he avoid travel at that time as he prepared for his next album, “Origins Vol. 4.”

However, on October 6, he announced the cancellation of his remaining 2025 tour dates due to ongoing medical issues.

Early Life and Influences

Born Paul Daniel Frehley in the Bronx, New York, he was exposed to music from an early age, teaching himself to play guitar. Influenced by musical icons like B.B. King and Jimi Hendrix, Frehley became an iconic figure in rock music.

Frehley himself remarked, “I’m always flattered when people tell me I influenced them,” showcasing his humility despite his significant impact on many aspiring guitarists.

The Rise of KISS

In 1973, Frehley rose to fame as one of the four founding members of KISS, alongside Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, and Peter Criss. He played lead guitar and occasionally took the spotlight as a vocalist in notable tracks such as “Shock Me” and “Into the Void.”

Frehley became known for his unique persona, “The Spaceman,” characterized by striking silver face makeup and elaborate stage effects. After leaving KISS in 1982, he pursued other musical ventures, including forming Frehley’s Comet and releasing music as a solo artist.

Recent Work and Reunion

His latest solo album, “10,000 Volts,” was released in February 2023. Despite a tumultuous relationship with KISS post-departure, Frehley reunited with the band in 1996 for a reunion tour that lasted until 2002.

In more recent years, Frehley performed alongside Simmons at charity events, rekindling connections with his former bandmates. This included a surprise performance during Simmons’ “Vault experience” in January 2018.

KISS’s Final Performances

KISS concluded their extensive career with two final shows at Madison Square Garden in New York City in December 2024, part of their “End of the Road World Tour.” While Simmons and Stanley invited Frehley to participate, he declined.

Legacy of Ace Frehley

The legacy of Ace Frehley transcends his music. He has influenced countless musicians and left an indelible mark on rock culture. His contributions to KISS and the music industry will be remembered by fans and fellow artists alike.
