Dobbies Achieves Turnaround Success Yet Awaits Full Bloom Says GlobalData

Dobbies has reported its financial figures for the year ending February 23, 2025, revealing a significant corporate shift. Despite challenges, the company is poised for a potential return to profitability.
Dobbies’ Turnaround Success Yet to Fully Bloom
Oliver Maddison, an apparel analyst at GlobalData, has shared insights on Dobbies’ recent developments. The retailer strategically closed 24 underperforming sites earlier this year. This decision, while leading to a revenue reduction of £56 million in FY2024/25, has positively impacted overall profitability by considerably improving operating losses.
Performance Overview
In terms of sales, Dobbies experienced a 3.9% decline in revenue from continuing operations. In comparison, competitor Blue Diamond reported a lesser decline of 1.8% in 2024, excluding its Frosts acquisition. Both businesses faced difficulties attributed to unfavorable weather conditions.
Management Focus and Future Strategies
The ongoing turnaround plan at Dobbies necessitated a shift in focus for senior management. This shift involved prioritizing strategic initiatives over daily store operations. Looking ahead, the company aims to enhance performance through investments in store layouts and product ranges.
Emphasis on Restaurant Growth
A key area of focus for Dobbies is the expansion of its restaurant operations, aiming to transform its garden centers into appealing shopping and social venues. Recent results indicate that Blue Diamond experienced a 9.1% increase in like-for-like restaurant sales, compared to a 2.1% rise in garden center sales. Dobbies aims to replicate this success.
Ongoing Renovations and Future Prospects
Dobbies is already implementing changes across its sites. Four of its remaining 53 locations have undergone renovations, with six more either in progress or set to begin soon. However, there was no disclosed timeline for renovations at the remaining 43 locations.
As for the current fiscal year 2025/26, Dobbies is witnessing improved like-for-like sales, attributed to favorable weather. Enhanced supplier relationships, better stock availability, and increased gross profit margins are also contributing to the signs of recovery.
