Maddinson Opens Up About His Battle with Testicular Cancer

Nic Maddinson, a cricketer from New South Wales, has opened up about his battle with testicular cancer. The 33-year-old athlete discovered a lump earlier this year, leading to a life-altering diagnosis.
Early Diagnosis and Treatment
Maddinson’s challenges began in April when he learned he had testicular cancer after experiencing symptoms he initially thought were viral. Seeking help from New South Wales’ medical staff, he consulted Dr. John Orchard, who conducted scans that revealed a tumor.
Following the diagnosis, Maddinson underwent surgery to remove the cancerous growth. Unfortunately, subsequent tests indicated that the cancer had metastasized to his abdominal lymph nodes and lung. This shocking news forced Maddinson to begin a rigorous chemotherapy regimen.
Impact on Personal Life
During his treatment, Maddinson’s personal life faced additional challenges. His wife, Bianca, was pregnant with their second child and had to quit her job as a dentist to care for their toddler son. This added strain weighed heavily on Maddinson as he navigated his health crisis.
Recovery and Return to Cricket
Maddinson completed his chemotherapy on July 14. Just ten days later, he stepped into the nets for his first practice since the diagnosis. After two months of gradual recovery, he was finally cleared for full training.
- Last chemotherapy session: July 14
- First return to nets: July 24
- Full training resumed in September
Now, Maddinson aims to return to playing cricket at various levels, including Sydney Premier Cricket and possibly the New South Wales second XI. He expressed hope for a Shield team return in November.
Message of Awareness
In light of his experience, Maddinson has emphasized the importance of regular check-ups. He wishes to encourage others to take any unusual symptoms seriously. “If one person reads my story and decides to get checked, that would make a difference,” he stated.
With the arrival of his second son, Wilder, Maddinson reflects on the importance of health and the necessity of vigilance when it comes to physical well-being. “I thought it would go away. To realize the cancer had spread was terrifying,” he said, urging people not to overlook their health.
As he looks towards resuming his cricket career, Maddinson remains grateful for his recovery and the support of his family and friends, especially close teammate Adam Zampa, who was among the few aware of his battle. “I’m just excited to play again,” he concluded.
