Clement and Gimenez Lead Ex-Guardians in Creating a Welcoming Atmosphere at Blue Jays Clubhouse

In a recent interview, Josh Naylor, a first baseman for the Seattle Mariners, expressed his excitement about playing postseason baseball against the Toronto Blue Jays. Originally from Mississauga, Ontario, Naylor remarked on how special it is to face former teammates from the Cleveland Guardians, including outfielders Myles Straw, relief pitcher Nick Sandlin, infielders Andres Gimenez and Ernie Clement, along with pitcher Shane Bieber.

Clement and Gimenez Foster a Welcoming Atmosphere at Blue Jays Clubhouse

All five former Guardians players contribute to a positive culture within the Blue Jays. Naylor highlighted the camaraderie he shares with his friends, referring to them as “phenomenal” and emphasizing the strong connections forged during their time in Cleveland.

Clement, who joined the Blue Jays on a minor-league deal in March 2023 after playing for the Oakland Athletics, noted that the organizational culture from Cleveland is beneficial in their new home. He mentioned that the Blue Jays’ leadership, including team president Mark Shapiro and general manager Ross Atkins, previously worked with the Guardians.

Former Guardians Create Team Cohesion

Shane Bieber, who was traded to the Blue Jays on July 31, stated that having fellow former teammates made his transition smoother. He quickly created a group text upon his arrival, helping him feel at home in the new clubhouse.

Manager John Schneider remarked on the shared history within the team, playfully suggesting that having been a part of the Guardians might be a prerequisite for joining the Blue Jays. He believes this familiarity enhances team unity, especially during challenging times.

Playoff Journey Continues

The Seattle Mariners currently hold a 2-0 lead over the Blue Jays in the American League Championship Series (ALCS), winning the first two games decisively: 3-1 and 10-3. Next, the series heads to Seattle, with games three and four scheduled to give the Mariners a chance to extend their lead.

Despite the intense competition, Naylor expressed gratitude for realigning with his former teammates, cherishing the memories created during their time together on and off the field.

Max Scherzer’s Role in the ALCS

The Blue Jays have also announced that Max Scherzer, a veteran pitcher and three-time Cy Young Award winner, will start in Game 4 of the ALCS. After recovering from neck pain, Scherzer is set to make his 26th postseason start. Despite a challenging recent performance, team manager Schneider trusts Scherzer to rise to the occasion in this crucial series.

With former Guardians players bringing familiarity and a sense of team spirit, the Blue Jays aim to leverage their connections as they strive to advance in the playoffs.
