Tragic Passing of Former Notre Dame and NFL Star at 62 Shocks Fans

Larry Williams, a former standout offensive lineman at Notre Dame and a notable NFL veteran, has tragically passed away at the age of 62. His sudden death occurred on Thursday morning during a workout at the University of San Francisco (USF), where he had served as the athletic director since 2022. According to journalist John Canzano, Williams suffered a fatal heart-related incident.

Career Highlights and Accomplishments

Born in Orange, California, Williams became a two-time All-American while playing football at the University of Notre Dame. He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 1986 and had a successful NFL career spanning five seasons from 1986 to 1992. Over his career, he played for the:

  • Cleveland Browns (1986-1988)
  • New Orleans Saints (1991)
  • New England Patriots (1992)

During his time in the league, Williams played 61 games, starting 44. His career was marked by a notable season in 1988 when he started 14 games and recorded one fumble recovery. After drafting him, the Browns later signed him to the San Diego Chargers in 1989; however, injuries prevented him from playing that season and the following year.

Educational Background and Post-Football Career

Williams not only excelled on the field but also pursued education vigorously. He earned a law degree from the University of San Diego while playing in the NFL. After retiring in 1993, he began a career in law with the Indianapolis-based firm Baker & Daniels.

His strong connection with Notre Dame led him back to the university in 1999 to work in licensing and product marketing. In 2004, he transitioned to a more prominent role as an athletic director, with previous positions held at:

  • University of Portland
  • Marquette University
  • University of Akron

Legacy and Family

Williams is remembered not only for his athletic prowess but also for his leadership in athletics. Following his untimely passing, Stephanie Shrieve-Hawkins, who has been with USF since August 2024, has been appointed as the interim athletic director.

He leaves behind a loving family, including his wife, Laura, and their children: Kristin, Sean, Scott, Eric, and Louis, along with several grandchildren. The sports community mourns the loss of this remarkable individual, whose contributions to football and his community will not be forgotten.
