Aidan Gillen Stars as a 1980s Pop Icon Confronting a Moral Crisis in Kathryn Fergusons Nostalgie

Kathryn Ferguson’s new short film, Nostalgie, features Aidan Gillen as a 1980s pop icon navigating a profound moral crisis. This 19-minute narrative highlights the challenges of an artist responding to unexpected events from their past.

Aidan Gillen’s Role in Nostalgie

Aidan Gillen, known for his roles in Game of Thrones, Peaky Blinders, and The Wire, stars as the protagonist. He is joined by Jessica Reynolds and Michael Smiley, adding depth to the ensemble cast. The film’s narrative centers on a retired pop star who receives a striking invitation to perform, confronting him with ethical dilemmas.

The Creative Team Behind Nostalgie

Nostalgie draws inspiration from a short story by Wendy Erskine. The screenplay was penned by Stacey Gregg, with the film produced by Stille Productions and Tara Films Production, in collaboration with Globe Originals and Hopefield. Key figures in its production include executive producers Lucy Pullin, Neil Chordia, Tim Clark, Amy O’Hara, and Eleanor Emptage, alongside Ferguson.

Music and Cinematography

  • Editing was conducted by Mick Mahon and Edel McDonnell.
  • Robbie Ryan served as the director of photography.
  • Dan Smith, the lead singer of Bastille, contributed the film’s songs and score.

Film Festival Premiere

The film will world premiere at the 69th BFI London Film Festival (LFF), recognized as one of four shorts supported by Film4. This edition’s theme is “Pulling the Rug Out,” and the premiere is scheduled for Friday.

Nostalgia and Moral Questions

Ferguson emphasizes the film’s exploration of how artists can lose control over their work. This theme resonates with real-life scenarios in Northern Ireland, where songs by renowned musicians are often used in ways contrary to their original intent. For instance, Tina Turner’s “Simply the Best” has been associated with paramilitary groups.

Future Endeavors

Following Nostalgie, Ferguson intends to expand her focus on drama and fiction projects. She is currently finalizing a new feature documentary set for release in early 2026 and is developing a script for a future feature film. This experience has enriched her desire to create more narrative works, blending her documentary background with fictional storytelling innovations.
