York Knights and Toulouse Olympique Promoted to Super League’s Top Flight

The recent announcement of York Knights and Toulouse Olympique’s promotion to the Super League marks a significant moment in rugby league. As two clubs ascend to this prestigious league, it casts a shadow of disappointment over other Championship teams vying for the top tier.

Championship Teams Left Behind

  • Oldham
  • Widnes Vikings
  • Doncaster
  • London Broncos

These teams will remain in an expanded second tier for the upcoming season. Despite their efforts, they failed to secure promotion.

London Broncos’ Future Plans

The London Broncos find themselves in a transitional phase. They are set to be under new ownership, which includes Australian rugby icon Darren Lockyer and ex-Leeds Rhinos CEO Gary Hetherington, along with businessman Grant Wechsel. This group aims to revitalize the club’s fortunes.

Recently, the Broncos appointed Jason Demetriou as their head coach on a three-year contract. They have also made significant signings, including:

  • Reagan Campbell-Gillard (former Australia international)
  • Siliva Havili (Tonga hooker)

Despite finishing 10th in the Championship last season, the ownership group is committed to providing funding, reinforcing their intent even without immediate promotion to the Super League.

Commitment to Success

Grant Wechsel expressed the ownership group’s dedication to the club’s long-term vision. He emphasized that the London Broncos need to return to the Super League and that they will persistently strive for this goal.

“While we are naturally disappointed not to have been promoted, our belief in this project will not waver,” he stated. The focus remains on winning the Championship and enhancing the organization’s overall structure.

Other Championship Teams Analyze Their Future

Oldham, another team left behind, finished fourth in the Championship. They have made notable acquisitions, adding players like Jack Ormondroyd and Ryan Brierley from Salford Red Devils. Unfortunately, this marks their first absence from Super League since 1997.

Widnes Vikings will not return to the top flight for the first time since 2018. Doncaster also fell short in their quest for Super League status.

However, Huddersfield Giants and Hull FC have secured their places in the Super League for the next season, thanks to previous IMG grading results.
