Perth Sees Record-Breaking Rainfall This Weekend After Nine Years

Perth has recently experienced record-breaking rainfall this weekend, marking a significant shift in weather patterns for the city. This year, 2025, has seen an unprecedented 32 rainy weekends, equivalent to 16 full weekends, setting a record not seen in the past nine years.

Weekend Rainfall Statistics

  • 2025: 218.6mm of rain on weekends.
  • 2024: 128mm of rain on weekends.
  • 2023: 99.4mm of rain on weekends.
  • 2016: 316.6mm of rain during the same period.

Since July, only two weekends in Perth have been dry. Notably, September had no weekends without rain, contrasting sharply with last year’s two dry weekends during the same month.

Impact on Local Events and Markets

The ongoing rain has adversely affected local events, including the Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia’s show. Attendance dropped significantly from 438,636 in 2024 to around 300,000 in 2025, partly due to heavy downpours.

Additionally, Freo Farmers Markets faced multiple weather-related cancellations this season. Organiser Kylie Wheatley reported that these disruptions have financially impacted both vendors and local farmers, many of whom traveled long distances to participate.

Challenges for Farmers

Cancellations have left many farmers distressed, as they could not sell their produce, leading to significant financial losses. “I’ve never had a season like this,” Wheatley said, reflecting on the hardships faced by local suppliers due to the continuous rain.

Weather Conditions and Forecast

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the high volume of rainfall this year stems from cold fronts and slow-moving troughs. While the wet weekend weather appears random, its impact has created a challenging environment for many local businesses.

Despite these conditions, summer weather is on the horizon, with forecasts indicating sunny days ahead. Temperatures in Perth are expected to reach 25°C by Sunday, climbing to 26°C on Monday and Tuesday. Preliminary long-range forecasts predict an 82% chance of above median maximum temperatures and an 89% chance of above median minimum temperatures for the upcoming season.
