Red and White Stripes Unite the Battlefords in Anticipation of Remembrance Day
A community initiative is uniting residents of the Battlefords in preparation for Remembrance Day. This year, red and white stripes will adorn crosswalks as a tribute to veterans from all wars.
Personal Connections to Remembrance
For local resident Lisa Hawtin, Remembrance Day holds significant personal meaning. She lost a cousin in Afghanistan, which deepened her commitment to honoring all veterans. “This remembrance is for everyone,” Hawtin said. Her sentiments reflect the community’s appreciation for those who serve and sacrifice.
A Collaborative Effort
The project received support from various community members and local businesses. 306 Paint and Shades donated paint, while Home Hardware North Battleford provided essential tools. Century 21 Prairie Elite contributed by offering volunteer staff. This cooperation showcases the town’s spirit of generosity.

Inspector Ryan How, the commander of the Battlefords RCMP, participated in the initiative alongside his daughter, Sadie. “Canadians are respected globally for their sacrifices,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of honoring veterans, including those in the RCMP.
Younger Generations Learning Value
The initiative also fosters discussion among youth. Sadie highlighted the importance of ongoing remembrance activities. “It’s easy to forget,” she noted, stressing that such efforts help instill respect in younger generations.
Spreading Gratitude Through Action
On the same day, another crosswalk was painted in the Town of Battleford, led by Royal Canadian Legion Branch 9. This second-year tribute occurred at a crosswalk located between 2nd Avenue West and 23rd Street, recognizing the service of veterans.
Deanna Beasse, one of the project leaders, shared, “This initiative shows our respect for the veterans and our appreciation for their sacrifices.” Former Branch 9 president Paula Kulyk added that involving children in these activities is essential for historical awareness.
Encouraging Historical Inquiry
Last year’s project sparked curiosity among students. Kulyk noted that educators reported increased questions about local history and the role of Battleford in wartime. Young volunteer Jairah Forrest expressed her thoughts, saying, “It’s important to cherish peace and the moments with loved ones.”
As global conflicts persist, Kulyk emphasized the need for youth to engage in meaningful conversations about service and sacrifice. “They are our future protectors,” she stated, grateful for the younger generation’s willingness to learn and serve.
