Protest in Albi: Retirees Rally Against Frozen Pensions Amid Declining Purchasing Power

The recent protest in Albi showcased the growing concerns among retirees regarding frozen pensions and declining purchasing power. Organized by several labor unions, the rally attracted around thirty participants from various groups including CGT, Solidaires, FSU, and FO.
Details of the Protest
On October 17, the rally commenced at the national garden and proceeded to the prefecture under pleasant autumn weather. Despite the low turnout, the message was clear: retirees are increasingly worried about their financial stability.
Key Issues Addressed
- Calls for immediate increases in supplementary pensions.
- Concerns over the recent freeze on pensions and the termination of the 10% tax exemption.
- Desires for the complete abolition of the pension reform, rather than its suspension.
Marie-Claire Culié, the secretary of the Union of Retired Workers (USR) CGT of Tarn, articulated the frustrations felt by many. She emphasized that retirees contribute significantly to the economy by purchasing goods, which indirectly supports their families.
Concerns About Financial Stability
Attendees voiced their fears about an uncertain future. Many expressed that their lifelong contributions might not enable them to sustain a decent living. Comments from a group of activists highlighted the urgency of the situation, stressing that soon they might struggle to make ends meet.
Future Mobilization Plans
On the same day as the protest, the Agirc-Arrco administrative council was also set to meet. Culié advocated for a 10% increase in the service value of points as compensation for losses incurred since 2020.
Culié announced another nationwide demonstration against the pension reform scheduled for November 6. She stressed the significance of collective action to effect change, urging retirees and supporters to rally for their rights in the upcoming weeks.
