Southsea Friends Provide Vital Support for Residents with Hearing Loss

Three friends from Southsea are gearing up to participate in the AJ Bell Great South Run this Sunday. Clare Parker, Kim Jones, and Emma Gueterbock will cover 10 miles of the iconic seafront. Their mission is to raise awareness and funds for individuals with hearing loss.
Passion for a Cause
Despite being “on the wrong side of 50,” as Emma jokes, the trio is committed and determined. All three women have participated in the Great South Run previously. Kim has extensive experience, including several Great North Runs and London Marathons since her first race in 1983.
Supporting Lipreading Classes
This year, Clare and Emma are focused on regaining their fitness and promoting a cause close to their hearts: lipreading classes for the hearing impaired. Emma stated, “Clare and I teach free lipreading classes in Portsmouth and the surrounding area.” These classes serve as a vital lifeline, helping individuals with hearing loss combat social isolation and rebuild their confidence.
- Free lipreading classes offered in Portsmouth.
- Cater to individuals experiencing hearing loss.
- Focus on building community and coping strategies.
- Government funding for lipreading lessons has been cut.
Due to this reclassification, Emma and Clare must fundraise annually to support their groups. “We want to keep our groups running through 2026 and beyond,” Emma added. Their goal is to not only raise funds but also increase awareness about the challenges faced by people with hearing loss.
Community Engagement
Emma, however, will not run this year. After breaking her ankle in September, she encouraged her friend Kim to take her place. “I am looking forward to race day,” Kim said, expressing pride in supporting Emma and Lipreading Life.
Emma fondly recalls her experiences at the Great South Run since moving to Southsea in 2010. She has previously participated alongside her husband Andrew and her son Angus, who once ran in full American football gear. Emma has also enjoyed volunteering as a race marshal, noting the inspiring atmosphere of the event.
Training and Tips for Runners
Clare and Kim have maintained steady training throughout the summer. They are excited to receive support from the crowd during the challenging last miles of the race. “Everyone has a different goal,” Emma advised. “What’s yours? Go get it… and don’t forget to smile!”
- Clare encourages runners to pace themselves and enjoy the atmosphere.
- Kim emphasizes belief in one’s own abilities: “Keep going, one step at a time.”
- Emma inspires with her motto: “Make your goal, and chase it!”
As Clare and Kim tackle the 10-mile route through Portsmouth’s historic streets, they exemplify how running can serve as a platform for building community, sparking conversation, and changing lives.
