Albertans to Choose New Provincial Licence Plate Design Through Exciting Tournament Vote

Albertans can participate in an exciting opportunity to choose a new provincial licence plate design. The Alberta government has introduced a tournament-style voting system aimed at revealing one of eight designs starting next year.

Vote for Alberta’s New Licence Plate Design

The provincial government unveiled the designs during a news conference on Wednesday. All eight options prominently feature the phrase “Strong and Free,” which is Alberta’s provincial motto. Premier Danielle Smith emphasized the significance of this motto, linking it to Canada’s national identity.

Details of the Tournament Vote

Residents can visit the official page on the province’s website to cast their votes until November 5. Each design celebrates Alberta’s rich landscapes and cultural symbols.

  • Designs include elements such as:
    • Mountains
    • Pumpjacks
    • Cowboys

Premier Smith described these images as a reflection of Alberta’s natural beauty and collective identity. “They represent what it means to be Albertan,” she said.

Political Context and Cost Implications

During the news conference, both Premier Smith and Service Alberta Minister Dale Nally addressed concerns regarding the political implications of including the motto on the new plates. Nally defended the decision, stating that it is not politically motivated, citing its use in the national anthem and recent royal addresses.

Nally confirmed that the redesign will not involve additional funding outside of his current budget. The expected costs for implementing the new plates are estimated to fall between $25,000 and $50,000.

Transitioning to the New Design

Alberta’s existing licence plate, which bears the slogan “Wild Rose Country,” has been in use for many years. The new designs will still incorporate the wild rose, maintaining a cultural touchstone.

Albertans wishing to replace their current plates can pay a fee of $28 to receive a new design once it is available. They may also opt to obtain a new plate during vehicle registration renewal without extra charges. Importantly, existing plates can still be used if they remain in good condition.
