Chad Reestablishes Partnership with Wildlife Charity Associated with Prince Harry

Chad has renewed its partnership with a wildlife charity associated with Prince Harry. This decision comes shortly after ending the collaboration on October 6, over concerns about poaching control. A joint statement on Friday announced the resumption of discussions to manage Chad’s protected areas.

Reestablishing Conservation Efforts

African Parks, affiliated with Prince Harry, will once more oversee Zakouma National Park and Ennedi Natural and Cultural Reserve. These areas had been under its management for 15 years. The organization looks to continue funding and co-managing these regions, focusing on future project implementations.

Dialogue and Cooperation

The recent agreement marks the end of a challenging period of negotiations. A mutual understanding was achieved through significant dialogue. Peter Fearnhead, CEO of African Parks, stated this move lays a stable base for preserving Chad’s natural and cultural assets alongside its communities.

Challenges and Accusations

Chad’s government had previously accused African Parks of failing in anti-poaching efforts and showing a lack of respect. The environment ministry specifically noted insufficient investment led to increased poaching incidents.

  • Founded in 2000, African Parks administers around 20 national parks across 12 countries.
  • Its mission is advancing conservation in Africa and globally.

Earlier this year, the charity faced criticism over abuse claims in a park it managed in the Republic of Congo. While admitting the issue, the organization chose not to release an independent report on the matter.

Emegypt will continue to follow developments in Chad’s conservation efforts and report any new updates on this partnership.
