Tessa Thompson Dives into Nia DaCosta’s Film Hedda Discusses Creed IV and Reveals the Valkyrie Accessories She Misses

Tessa Thompson is set to star in Nia DaCosta’s upcoming film Hedda, premiering in theaters on October 22. This film is a modern reinterpretation of Henrik Ibsen’s classic play. In her portrayal of Hedda Gabler, Thompson explores themes of personal fulfillment and societal disruption.

Tessa Thompson on her Role in Hedda

During a recent episode of Take Ten, Thompson shared insights from the set of Hedda. She described the atmosphere, highlighting activities such as drinking “fake martinis” and engaging in spirited card games. The cast also formed a WhatsApp group humorously named “Casino Royale.”

Thompson reflected on her character’s journey, stating, “Hedda is searching for a satisfying life. She feels trapped in a reality that doesn’t align with her true self.” This quest leads Hedda to take drastic actions, which Thompson admits may be unsavory. Nevertheless, she views the desire for a fulfilling existence as a beautiful pursuit.

A Fresh Take on a Classic

Director Nia DaCosta brings a new perspective to Ibsen’s narrative by situating the story in 1950s England. Notably, DaCosta replaces the male character Eilert Løvborg with a female counterpart, Eileen, portrayed by Nina Hoss. The cast also includes Imogen Poots as Thea, Nicholas Pinnock as Judge Brack, and Tom Bateman as George.

Thompson’s Thoughts on Comparisons to Hamlet

Thompson addressed the comparison of Hedda to Hamlet, stating, “I don’t quite agree. Really, Hamlet is the male Hedda.” She humorously suggested what Hedda might include in her Instagram bio, quoting a line from the film: “The best time to leave a party is after something terrible’s happened, but before the police come.”

Looking Ahead: Creed IV and Valkyrie Accessories

Beyond Hedda, Thompson hinted at her return as Bianca Taylor in Michael B. Jordan’s Creed IV. She expressed how the emotional depth of these films consistently affects her, prompting tears every time she watches them. Additionally, she reminisced about the accessories from her role as Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder that she wishes she had kept.
