Historic First for Isuzu UTE A-League as Transparent VAR and Landmark Aussie Appointment Make History

Football Australia (FA) is set to implement a groundbreaking change in the Isuzu UTE A-League by introducing VARdict for the 2025-26 season. This system aims to enhance transparency in officiating by providing real-time updates on big screens during Video Assistant Referee (VAR) checks. Supporters will experience a more engaging match experience with immediate insights into key decisions.

Historic Appointment of Casey Reibelt

In a landmark achievement, Casey Reibelt has been appointed as Australia’s first full-time female referee. Her appointment symbolizes progress in the professionalization of refereeing within the league. Additionally, FA plans to expand the A-Leagues Professional Referee Panel from four to 13 officials, ensuring a stronger and more consistent officiating presence.

Expansion of the Referee Panel

  • Increased panel: From four to 13 officials.
  • Six full-time referees supported by seven part-time referees.
  • Focus on enhancing officiating depth, consistency, and quality.

New Initiatives in Refereeing

Alongside Reibelt’s historic appointment, FA will welcome five new Match Official Developers. Their roles will focus on the well-being and long-term development of referees. Key figures in this initiative include Kelly Jones and Renae Coghill, who will drive female refereeing development, and Chris Beath, David Walsh, and Luke Brennan, who will support men’s competitions.

Upcoming Law Changes for 2025-26

The upcoming season will also see various law changes in line with the latest updates from the International Football Association Board (IFAB). Key adjustments include:

  • Dropped Ball: Revised procedures to enhance fairness and game flow.
  • Double Touch at Penalty Kicks: Clarified enforcement guidelines for double touches.
  • Captains Only Approach: Only team captains may communicate directly with referees.
  • Goalkeepers’ 8-Second Release: Reinforced time limits for goalkeepers in possession.

Jon Moss, Football Australia’s Head of Refereeing, expressed pride in the advancements made in refereeing. He highlighted the commitment to support referees through law updates, professional growth, and international recognition.
