Iconic Hermès Bag Once Owned by Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg Set for Auction

The renowned Hermès Haut à Courroies (HAC) 50 bag, once owned by Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg, is set to be auctioned this fall. Christie’s has confirmed that this historic accessory will headline the “Handbags & Accessories” live sale in Paris. The bag was frequently seen with the couple during their travels between London and Paris.
Historical Significance of the Hermès HAC 50
The HAC 50 inspired the creation of the iconic Birkin bag, a design born from Birkin’s chance encounter with Jean-Louis Dumas of Hermès in the early 1980s. Initially intended to carry boots and saddles, Hermès introduced the HAC in 1892. The design featured dual handles and belt-like straps, evolving to meet the needs of travelers.
Auction Details and World Tour
The HAC 50 will embark on a global display journey before the auction. This includes stops in Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Paris from October 30 to November 6. The bag is notable for its original saddle stitching and clochette with keys. Jane Birkin generously donated this bag in 2019 to support Médecins du Monde.
Recent Auction Records
In a remarkable auction event in July, the original Birkin bag sold for $10.1 million at Sotheby’s. This highlights the enduring appeal and value of Birkin-inspired designs. Over the years, the Birkin bag has seen slight modifications. The original 40 cm size has been adjusted to 35 cm, and the model no longer includes a shoulder strap.
